Endodontics treatments
Discomfort of the teeth signals that bacteria have reached the area where the nerve is located, and caused inflammation. Proper endodontic treatment removes bacteria and gives the body a chance to repair damaged tissue. Here, at Pasindora dental practice will take on the challenge to restore your beautiful and healthy smile, pain free.
What is endodontics?
Endodontics emerged as a branch of dental medicine about 50 years ago. This specialization aims to prevent, diagnose and treat conditions originating from the soft tissue inside the tooth.
The endodontist performs treatments on the tooth canal, treatments aimed at maintaining the health of natural teeth so that the patient can enjoy them as long as possible. The treatments consist in disinfecting the affected canals and, implicitly, in eliminating the pain caused by the pulp inflammation, which reacts to hot, cold, sweet or sour.
What is the difference between an endodontist and a dentist?
The endodontist is the person specialized in this branch, respectively the one who followed additional training programs in this regard. Instead, the dentist covers a wide range of activities, being a generalist. Of course, the dentist can also apply endodontic treatments, but the specialized doctor also manages to solve the complex cases of this dental segment.
When is endodontic treatment needed?
A recurring question is related to the right time for endodontic treatment. The procedure is necessary when there is an already treated tooth in the canal, and it develops an inflammatory process. Endodontics works in this sense by eliminating the infection and by preventing its spread in the periodontal tissues.
How long does a root canal treatment take?
The time allocated to such treatment may vary depending on the case. In general, a root canal treatment can take about two hours, with only one visit required. In complex cases, several such meetings may be needed.
What are the stages of an endodontic treatment?
Endodontic treatment consists of three main stages:
- Preparation of the root canal - the first and most important stage, influencing the entire subsequent treatment;
- Removal of the nerve - stage two is carried out with the help of several substances, in different stages, each having a particular role in the disinfection of the root canal;
- Canal obturation - in this stage the root canal is sealed, using a special paste and gutta-percha, either by the classic method or by using the 3D technique.
Is pain after root canal treatment normal?
The fear of pain is natural, and that is why we want to give our patients as pleasant an experience as possible at Pasindora. The entire treatment will be performed under anesthesia, which means there will be no pain. However, following the treatment, it is possible to feel slight pain or discomfort.
It is important that, after the endodontic treatment, the treated tooth is not stressed by chewing or biting food on it. Moreover, it is necessary to restore teeth as quickly as possible after root canal treatment to avoid complications and additional pain.
How painful is the root canal procedure?
In general cases, where an endodontic treatment is performed on an uncomplicated tooth, local anesthesia helps the patient feel no pain or even discomfort. On the other hand, if we are talking about cases where pulp inflammation and tissue infection are very advanced, the anesthetic may not work at its maximum efficiency, in which situation the patient may feel a slight discomfort.
Following the endodontic treatment, but also between its sessions, the teeth may become sensitive – this can be alleviated with the help of anti-inflammatory medication and moderate painkillers.
